Unemployment remains at 2.8%


The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 2.8% in the March-May period this year, unchanged from February-April, the Census & Statistics Department said today.

 

The underemployment rate remained unchanged at 1%.

 

Total employment decreased by 1,700 to 3,864,900 while the labour force decreased by 2,300 to 3,977,200.

 

The number of unemployed people dropped by 600 to 112,300 while the number of underemployed people was 41,000, about the same as the February-April period.

 

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Dr Law Chi-kwong said the labour market remained tight for the period.

 

?Under the generally favourable economic situation, the labour market will likely stay tight in the near term. Yet, we will continue to monitor closely the various external uncertainties and developments in the local labour market."
