Trial projects on fuel tech approved

The Environment & Ecology Bureau announced that an interdepartmental working group it leads has given an agreement-in-principle to three applications of trial projects on hydrogen fuel technology under the first batch.

Two such applications were submitted by Citybus to try out a hydrogen refuelling facility at a bus depot of the company and one hydrogen fuel cell (HFC) double-deck bus.

The third application was submitted by Hong Kong & China Gas Company to try out a hydrogen extraction facility at its Tai Po plant. These projects will commence within this year.

The bureau explained that the working group received the three applications of trial projects in the third quarter of last year and provided advice to the applicants after examining their applications.

Following the enhancement on the designs and technical details by the applicants to ensure the trial projects can be carried out smoothly and safely, the working group gave the agreement-in-principle to them at a meeting on March 24.

The Chief Executive announced in the 2022 Policy Address that trials would begin on HFC double-deck buses and heavy vehicles in 2023 and formulate long-term strategies for the application of hydrogen energy in road transport by 2025.
