Trees removed for safety

The Government removed the two banyan trees on Bonham Road in front of the University of Hong Kong's Tang Chi Ngong Building for public safety due to their deteriorating condition.

The Development Bureau said in a statement tonight the health and structures of the trees showed signs of distress.

The trunks were leaning towards the footpath, impacting the structural integrity of the wall, which showed clear signs of deformation, cracking and leaning.

It said a professional arborist under Lands Department contract conducted regular inspections and maintenance of the trees every six months, but their health did not improve.

The bureau's Tree Management Office invited experts from the Urban Forestry Advisory Panel to see the trees in April.

They agreed the trees' removal was necessary due to the danger they posed to public safety.

The Government removed the trees on May 20.
