Seminar hosted by CE

Chief Executive John Lee today hosted a seminar on the spirit of the ?two sessions? ie the first session of the 14th National People?s Congress and the first session of the 14th Chinese People?s Political Consultative Conference National Committee.

The seminar was aimed at enabling participants to have a deeper understanding of the essence of the ?two sessions? and its significance to Hong Kong?s development.

Liaison Office of the Central People?s Government in the Hong Kong SAR Director Zheng Yanxiong shared his views at the seminar.

Mr Zheng said that one of the main spirits of the ?two sessions? is to grasp the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping?s important speech.

The General Secretary stressed that the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and Macau is part and parcel of the building of a strong China. He outlined the full, faithful and resolute upholding of ?one country, two systems?, ?Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong?, ?Macau people administering Macau? and a high degree of autonomy. He also emphasised remaining committed to governing Hong Kong and Macau in accordance with the law as well as supporting the SARs in developing the economy, improving people?s livelihood and better integrating into the national development.

People must deeply learn, understand and implement these important requirements, Mr Zheng added.

The liaison office chief also pointed out that Hong Kong can pursue the three paths of leveraging its unique position and advantages.

First, Hong Kong should leverage its major advantages under ?one country, two systems?, strengthen its position as an international financial, shipping and trade centre, develop its new strength as an international innovation and technology centre, and maintain a free and open business environment, in order to better showcase the full charm of ?one country, two systems?.

Second, Hong Kong should maintain its edge in the rule of law and its common law system, and stay connected with the law and market systems of developed countries.

Third, Hong Kong should properly develop major advantages of a diverse culture, bring together global talent, and faithfully and resolutely set itself on a path of internationalisation.

On behalf of the Hong Kong SAR Government, the Chief Executive thanked Mr Zheng for sharing his insights, thereby giving participants a deeper understanding of the spirit of the ?two sessions? as well as the country?s policies, so they can seize national development opportunities and integrate into the country?s overall development.

Mr Lee pointed out that the ?two sessions? acknowledged Hong Kong?s unique positioning in Chinese-style modernisation, and the spirit of the ?two sessions? provided a profound insight to the city.

Government officials and all sectors of the community should learn about the spirit of the ?two sessions? and deepen understanding of the great innovation of ?one country, two systems?, he added.
