No in-person classes at school start

The new school year will start as scheduled, but classes and extracurricular activities will not be conducted face-to-face, Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung said today.

Meeting the media this afternoon, Mr Yeung said schools could use methods that allow students to learn from home, including online lessons.

He said: ?Because of some of the uncertainties of the development of the COVID-19 epidemic, it?s really difficult to say at this stage when the normal face-to-face lecturing, tutoring or teaching will be allowed.

?We will closely monitor the development of the epidemic and we?ll give sufficient notice to the schools when we think that it is appropriate or safe for schools to resume normal face-to-face lectures.?

Mr Yeung pointed out that kindergartens will also not hold any face-to-face lessons at this stage.

Regarding arrangements for the Primary 6 examination, Mr Yeung said the Government is looking into the issue carefully.

?We know that it?s a very important examination because it involves the future or the allocation of Secondary 1 places for students, so we will look at it carefully and we will try to make sure that the system will be as fair and as efficient as possible.?
