No compromises on railway safety

The Government will not compromise on railway safety.

Acting Chief Executive Matthew Cheung made the statement ahead of today?s Executive Council meeting.

Mr Cheung said the Government is very concerned about recent issues regarding construction problems found at some stations of the Shatin to Central Link project.

He said public safety is the Government?s top priority and no concessions will be made on the issue.

Mr Cheung added the Mass Transit Railway Corporation?s failure to submit a report about works on a reinforced concrete wall at the To Kwa Wan Station was unsatisfactory.

?The Director of Highways has already expressed our disappointment yesterday. And they promised to submit the report this morning.?

The railway operator will also submit a detailed account of excavation works at the Exhibition Centre Station today, he said.

On the Commission of Inquiry (COI), Mr Cheung said the Government expects it to focus on the Hung Hom Station.

?The Hung Hom case, is far more complex.

?We don?t want the COI to overextend itself or overstretch itself. (We want it to be) more focused and direct on the more complex problem.

?In the course of investigation, there will be certain issues common to all MTR contracts. I am sure that there will be some common denominators coming up in terms of, for example, work supervision.

?So we will certainly kick-start the COI as quickly as possible and at the same time keep a very close eye on the entire Shatin to Central line.?
