Loss of clinical specimens probed

The Department of Health announced today that clinical specimens of seven pregnant women went missing from the Tin Shui Wai Maternal & Child Health Centre and it has immediately contacted the affected clients to apologise.

The department said upon routine checking of laboratory results yesterday, the centre?s staff discovered that the results of Group B Streptococcus screening taken on June 10 for seven pregnant women were not available.

The clinical specimens which consisted of vaginal and rectal swabs could not be located despite a thorough site search.

Staff conducted repeat testing for the clients and further explained the incident to them in detail.

The incident has been reported to Police and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data.

The department is conducting a thorough investigation with a view to avoiding a recurrence of similar incidents.
