Historic buildings to be revamped


Four projects proposed by non-profit-making organisations have been selected to revamp four structures under Batch V of the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme.

 

Secretary for Development Michael Wong made the statement today during a press conference.

 

Roberts Block of the Old Victoria Barracks will be converted into the Roberts Block Open HeArts Centre and will hold creative arts workshops and therapy programmes.

 

Luen Wo Market will become Luen Wo Market - House of Urban & Rural Living. The project will revive traditional market operations with stalls and shops selling local vegetables, farm products and daily necessities.

 

The Former Lau Fau Shan Police Station will be turned into a facility to breed and train guide dogs. Some dogs will be trained at the site to provide therapy for children who suffer from autism and communicative problems.

 

Watervale House in the Former Gordon Hard Camp will become the Tuen Mun Soul Oasis, promoting a positive lifestyle through workshops, talks and courses on positive thinking and spiritual development.

 

Mr Wong thanked the Advisory Committee on Built Heritage Conservation for selecting the best adaptive re-use for the historic buildings.

 

He said he expects the operators to be self-sustaining financially over the long term.

 

"In vetting specific applications the committee and then the Government gave full consideration to whether the element of commence in the project is appropriate. In our view, they are appropriate."

 

The Government will earmark $365 million to renovate the four buildings and a further $18 million to subsidise the projects' initial operation.

 

The projects in this batch are set to start operation in four to five years.
