Gov't protects fare scheme

The Government is striving to prevent abuse of the Public Transport Fare Concession Scheme for the Elderly & Eligible Persons with Disabilities.

It made the statement after the Police arrested two green minibus drivers today and yesterday on suspicion of abusing the scheme.

The Transport Department established a series of monitoring measures that include deploying staff to conduct on-site inspections to ensure only eligible passengers enjoy concessionary fares. It also receives assistance from public transport operators who help prevent related abuse.

The department also studies Octopus card fare reports to compare it with passenger flows and if it detects any abuse, it will refer those cases to the Police.

The scheme has been implemented in phases since 2012 for the city?s elderly and eligible disabled to enjoy a concessionary fare of $2 per trip on various public transport routes. The programme's goal is to encourage beneficiaries to participate in more community activities.
