CE continues Belgium trip


Chief Executive Carrie Lam continued her visit to Belgium, where she met the European Commission President and visited the Belgian Parliament.

 

Mrs Lam met European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and told him Hong Kong?s economic outlook is positive with unemployment rate falling to a 20-year low.

 

The Belt & Road Initiative and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area development will inject new impetus to the city's economy, she added.

 

Mrs Lam said Hong Kong, a staunch supporter of free trade, signed a Free Trade Agreement and an Investment Agreement with the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations last year. She hoped to commence trade discussions with the European Union.

 

She also hoped to enhance youth exchanges with EU countries by launching more working holiday schemes.

 

Mrs Lam then visited the Belgian Parliament and met the President of the Chamber of Representatives, Siegfried Bracke.

 

She introduced Hong Kong's latest situation to him, including the successful implementation of "one country, two systems", the independent judiciary and new initiatives rolled out by the new term Government to enhance the city's competitiveness.

 

Mrs Lam attended a lunch hosted by the Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary and Head of the Chinese Mission to the EU, Zhang Ming and discussed the developments in the bilateral relations between China and the EU.

 

She thanked the mission for supporting exchanges between Hong Kong and the EU and for its help with the expansion of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government's external relations.

 

In the afternoon, Mrs Lam visited the GSK Vaccines' headquarters and learned about the company's research and development operations as well as their experience in carrying out clinical trials in Hong Kong.
