Air quality views sought

The Environmental Protection Department today launched a consultation exercise to collect views on the findings of the Air Quality Objectives (AQOs) review.

To attain the ultimate targets set under the World Health Organization guidelines, the Government will conduct the review every five years and assess the progress in improving air quality, to help decide the AQOs for the next five-year period.

The existing AQOs took effect on January 1, 2014, set to be broadly attained by 2020.

The Government set up a working group in mid-2016 to undertake assessments and discussions to evaluate air quality improvement and set the objectives to be attained in 2025.

The working group assessed the situation of air quality in 2025 and, based on the assessment results, proposed to tighten the AQOs for sulphur dioxide and fine suspended particulates.

The Government will make the final recommendations after taking into account views gathered during the public consultation.

People can submit their views through an online form, or download it and return the completed form by email.

They can also fax the form to 2838 2155, or post it to the department?s Air Policy Section 1 at 33/F, Revenue Tower, 33 Gloucester Road, Wan Chai.

Citizens are also welcome to join two public forums in August.
