71 adverse cases reported

The Department of Health has received a total of 71 reports of adverse events following immunisation related to the COVID-19 vaccines, representing 0.076% of all the doses administered.

Releasing today a summary report on the safety monitoring of COVID-19 vaccines in Hong Kong, the department said it has put in place a pharmacovigilance system. As of March 7, about 93,000 people have received their first jabs since the launch of the vaccination programme, with 71 reports of adverse events recevied.

It said most of the reports involved cases with presentation of mild events, such as dizziness and palpitation.

According to the World Health Organization, adverse events following immunisation refer to any untoward medical occurrences which follow immunisation. They do not necessarily have a causal relationship with the usage of vaccines.

The Expert Committee on Clinical Events Assessment Following COVID-19 Immunisation will conduct causality assessments on all important adverse events based on WHO?s algorithm when necessary information for the cases is available.
